Lane Kiffin Career
Kiffin has had an impressive, albeit contentious, career trajectory. He has 13 years of coaching experience. He has spent nine years at the National Collegiate Athletic Association, where he posted an all-time record of 66-39.
He worked as an assistant at Colorado State University. He also held the same position for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He worked at the University of South Carolina as the offensive coordinator before signing a contract with the Oakland Raiders.
He made history when he was hired as the league’s youngest head coach by Al Davis of the Oakland Raiders. The tumultuous relationship he shared with Davis made the news after he was pressured to resign and then fired from his coaching job. This prompted him to file a lawsuit against the Raiders for being fired without cause, which he subsequently lost.
Al Davis, who was known for losing his cool with coaches on a regular basis, publicly chastised Kiffin in 2008, calling him a liar and bringing shame to the Raiders. Tom Cable, the Raiders’ new head coach, said he lost respect for Kiffin after he tried to poach one of his assistants, James Cregg, when they were only weeks away from the NFL. Al Davis died in 2011, following which Kiffin gave a statement to the media that stated his gratitude and respect to the late owner of the Raiders for providing him with a wonderful opportunity.
In 2010, he moved back to USC, but this time for the position of head coach. He came under fire once more when he sought out and secured the verbal commitment of 13-year-old quarterback David Sills for USC.
In 2013, the USC Trojans had lost to Alabama State by a score of 62-41, after which he was fired by USC’s athletic director, Pat Haden, in an airport. Kiffin claimed in 2016 that his career’s lowest moment had been being fired at the USC airport.
At the University of Alabama, he served as the offensive coordinator from 2014 to 2016. He led the Florida Atlantic as a head coach from 2016 to 2018.
Kiffin’s career is associated with short-lived coaching stints in the USA.
