Sugar Ray Leonard Personal Life 

Ray Charles Leonard tied the knot to his Highschool sweetheart Juanita Wilkinson in 1980. The duo shares two boys. Unfortunately, their marriage came to an end in 1990.

Juanita Wilkinson accused Ray of Physical Harassment and Drug abuse. The allegations were initially denied by Ray but later he claimed them to be true.

He found love again, this time in Bernadette Robi, the daughter of Paul Robi. They got married in early 1993. Ray and Bernadette have a son and a daughter together.

 Ray Charles Leonard’s craze for boxing began due to his older brother, Roger. When Roger won trophies in Boxing, he teased Ray with those. Ray felt envious and started boxing in 1969.

In 1972, Ray took part in the featherweight and lightweight tournaments of the National AAU Tournament.

In 1974, Ray won the Light Welterweight Championship of the National AAU Tournament and Pan American Game.

Ray’s professional boxing career began in 1977. He fought Luis “The Bull” Vega. Ray was paid a whopping sum of $40,044 for the fight.

In 1978, Ray fought and defeated Floyd Mayweather and Randy Shields. A year later, he defeated Pete Ranzany and won the NABF Welterweight Championship.

A few months after NABF, the Ultimate Sugar Ray Leonard vs Wilfred Benitez happened. Ray won the fight. He was named “Fighter of the Year” in 1979.

Ray fought Roberto Duran in 1980 for which he received $9 million. This match was unanimously decided to be a tie. The tiebreaker took place in the same year, and Ray emerged as the winner.

Sugar Ray Leonard participated in the Second world championship in 1981. For his second world title, he defended his title by fighting against Larry Bonds Kalule, and Thomas Hearns.

After his second world championship title, Ray Leonard decided to take a Hiatus from boxing. He circled back to boxing in 1984 when he fought Kevin Howard.

After his retirement,  Sugar Ray Leonard announced that he would return to the ring to fight Marvin Hagler.

His interview generated a lot of criticism and controversy. The Fight between the best two was titled “The Super Fight”. The Super Fight took place at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in 1987. Ray was paid $11 million while Marvin was paid $12 million.

Even though Marvin Hagler was announced as the winner, there was a lot of confusion regarding the scoring. 

Sugar Ray Leonard officially retired in 1987 but made his second comeback in 1988.

For his third world championship, he fought Donny Lalonde, Thomas Hearns, and Roberto Duran.

Ray suffered a setback in 1991 when he fought Terry Norris at WBC Light Middleweight Championship. Ray was defeated and decided he was no longer fit for the fight.

After 6 years of retirement, Sugar Ray Leonard decided to fight Hèctor Camacho in 1997. The Fight took place in Atlantic City, NJ. Sugar Ray Leonard was defeated badly.

He announced it was time for him to finally retire from boxing and that The fight with Hèctor Camacho will be the last fight of his life.

Sugar Ray Leonard took part in season 12 of “Dancing with the Stars” but was eliminated in the 4Th week.
