Richard Thomas Personal Life

At the age of 24, Richard decided to settle down and married Alma Gonzales in 1975. Richard and Alma had their first child, a boy in 1976 and later had triplet daughters in 1981. After 18 years of marriage, Richard and Alma called it quits.

Richard married his second wife, Georgiana Bischoff in 1994. Together, Richard and Georgiana have a son who was born in 1996. Georgina’s kids from her past marriages are Brooke and Kendra.

Richard along with his wife, Georgiana, his son, and his stepdaughters happily resides in Manhattan, New York City.

Richard’s acting career started way before he played the role of John-boy in “The Waltons”. Richard’s broadway debut in Sunrise was when he was just seven. After this, in the year 1959, Richard appeared as Ivor in “A Doll’s House”.

In the early 1960s, Richard Thomas played various types of characters in many Television series like Way Out, Great Ghost Tales, The Defenders, From These Roots, The Edge of Night, A Flame in the Wind, Seaway, Marcus Welby, M.D., Medical Center, etc. Richard’s roles in these shows ranged from small cameos, special appearances, and two-three episodes. 

In the 1970s Richard had a breakthrough in his career with his role as John-Boy Walton in the popular historical drama ” The Waltons”. After gaining global recognition as John-Boy and working in the drama for 122 episodes, he left the show. Soon John-Boy’s role was taken by Robert Wightman but later Richard played the role again in Waltons TV movies in the 90s.

In 1969, Richard played the roles of Charley and Peter in the famous films Winning and Last Summer respectively. In 1971, Richard’s role as Joshua Arnold in Red Sky at Morning was noteworthy. 

In 1972, Richard played an important role in You’ll Like My Mother as Kenny. In 1974, Richard gave powerful performances in lead roles like Private Henry Fleming in the NBC TV movie The Red Badge of Courage.

In 1975, Richard played the role of  Cadet James Pelosi in the TV film The Silence. Richard was also a part of 1979’s Roots: The Next Generations where he played the role of Jim Warner. In 1980, Richard played a beautiful role as Shad in Battle Beyond the Stars.

Richard continued to play many striking characters in the 1980s like David Benjamin in “To Find My Son”, Lieutenant Sandy Mueller in Barefoot in the Park, Kenneth Talley Fifth of July, Hank Williams Jr in Living Proof: The Hank Williams, Jr. story, Henry Durie in The Master of Ballantrae, Marty Campbell in Final Jeopardy, etc.

In 1990, Richard played the role of Bill Denbrough in the television series “It” and Cal Porter – Andre’s Lover in Andre’s Mother. In 1991, Richard bagged the role of James O’Hanlan in “Yes Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus”.

Apart from acting in movies, Richard has also acted in a quartet of performances which includes Hamlet, Peer Gynt, Richard III, and Tiny Alice in the years 1987, 1989, 1994, and 1996 respectively. 

Richard has always played in theatres, like in 2001, he was in London’s West End, and in 2005, he was in The Public Theater’s production in Central Park in the play “As You Like It”. Richard was in 2003’s Just Cause.

Richard was on an American theater tour in 2006 where he played the influential role of Juror Eight. Richard starred in the Off-Broadway New York Public Theater in Timon of Athens in the year 2011. 

In 2018, Richard was a part of “A Musical Christmas Carol” and played Ebenezer Scrooge. Richard was cast in “Tell Me Your Secrets”, an Amazon thriller drama as Bodie Lord.

Richard was a part of season 4 of the Netflix series Ozark, released in January 2022, where he played the character of Nathan Davis. In April 2022, Richard played Atticus Finch in a stage production of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird.
