In 1964, he appeared in one of the episodes of NBC’s education drama series “Mr. Novak”.
The year 1965 changed the trajectory of Dolenz’s life. He was still in college when he auditioned for NBC’s show “The Monkees” where he landed the part of the drummer and the lead vocalist on the show. He had to take lessons on how to play drums as he was not acquainted with drums before. The Monkees’ first single, “Last Train to Clarksville” which was released even before the show had aired, debuted on billboard US spot 1. Their fame shot to astronomical levels.
By the time The Monkees went on a tour in late 1966, Dolenz could play the drums on his own. His voice stood out distinctly among all the members and he became the lead vocalist in the band’s smash hits like “I’m a believer”, “Daydream believer” and a lot of other songs. The show hit the Television screens and ran for two glorious years before being taken off the air. Micky Dolenz directed and co-wrote the last episode of the show. “The Monkees” was made into a featured film “Head” but this did not work well at the box office. He was signed by the record label MGM and for the next three years, that was his creative space. Meanwhile, he beautifully juggled his career as an actor. In 1972, he starred in a murder mystery film “Night of the Strangler” and an episode of “Adam 12”.
In 1975, he was joined by his fellow Monkees bandmates and they embarked on a 2-year tour. “The Monkees Greatest Hits” appeared on the charts in 1976, which helped him boost his music career.
From 1980-1983, he focused on harnessing his directorial best and directed the sitcom “Metal Mickey”. He also created and produced “Luna”.
In 1986, The Monkees reunited again after MTV had aired the series” The Monkees” and released a new album in 1996, which failed to chart. It was January 2005, when Dolenz joined as a morning disc jockey at WCBS-FM. June 3, 2005, saw his last regular show at the station. This also happened to mark his historical 100th show. The band had organized a farewell tour in 2021 with its two members, Micky Dolenz and Michael Nesmith.
