Larry Ellison was born to Florence Spellman on April 17, 1944. His biological father worked in the US army in Chicago in the Air Corps department as a pilot. They gave him up for adoption to his uncle and aunt when he was only nine months old.

He moved to Chicago at an early age to live with his uncle and aunt, Lillian and Louis Ellison. They have taken care of him since then. He was very close to his adoptive mother and emotionally distant from his adoptive father.

His father was a government employee and dabbled in the field of real estate. He made a small fortune from there to guarantee a good life and environment for Larry and their family.

The young Larrie graduated from South Shore High in 1961. He attended as a pre-med student at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. After his adopted mother’s demise, he dropped out of the university after realizing that pre-med is not for him. He took a short break after this.

After his break, he enrolled at the University of Chicago to study mathematics and physics and first encountered computer programming there. To pursue his interests, he dropped out after a year at the University of Chicago.

Personal Life of Larry Ellison

He had married and divorced four times in total. His first marriage was with Adda Quinn in 1967 and they parted ways in 1974.

Then a few years later he married Nancy Wheeler in 1976 and got divorced in 1978. 

He married Barbara Boothe who worked as a receptionist at Relational Software Inc in 1983 and had two children David and Margaret. Their children work as film producers in reputed firms like Annapurna Pictures and Skydance Media. They divorced later in 1987.

He had married Melanie Craft, a romance novelist from 2003 to 2010.

Career of Larry Ellison

At age of 22, the wandering Larry Ellison moved to California. There he worked from enterprise to enterprise gaining experience and knowledge as a computer programmer.

In the early 1970s, he landed a job at Ampex as a computer programmer. While working there, he came across a paper written by Edgar F. Codd on relational database systems which were an emerging field at that time,

“A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks” for IBM inspired Ellison so much that he dedicated his whole life to this sector. During his term at Ampex, he met Robert Miner and Edward Oates who shared the same interests as him.

Ellison later joined Amdahl Corporation to learn marketing and sales there. He kept in touch with Oates and Miner. While working in Amdahl Corporation, he came across a project which worked on storing and retrieving data which was similar to his projects in Ampex.

Ellison, with Miners and Oates, decided to venture into a startup called Software Development Labs in 1977. It was created to write programs for other companies. They solely worked on relational databases. 

They developed Sybase, one of the fastest-growing companies in the early 1990s. It was the customer’s favorite and most widely used software at that time. They later sold it to Microsoft, which is now called SQL. 

He served as CEO and CTO in Oracle till now. He managed to buy Sun Microsystems during his tenure as CEO.

Ellison worked at Apple for a brief period as its director but resigned in 2002. Now he is serving as executive chairman of Oracle Corporation, his brainchild.
