Jon Jones’s full name is Jonathan Dwight Jones. He was born on July 19, 1987, in Rochester, New York. His parents were Arthur and Camille Jones. His parents worked as a pastor and a nurse. He has three other siblings including three boys and one girl.

His brothers were professional footballers. Older brother Arthur Jones III had played for teams like Washington Redskins and Indianapolis Colts of the NBA whereas his youngest brother Chandler Jones was signed to Arizona Cardinals. His sister was the oldest among the siblings and died of a tumor before her 18th birthday.

He had shown talent in wrestling since childhood and had won the state championship for wrestling at the Union-Endicott High School, New York. The athletic drive and talent ran in Jones’ family blood. The Jones brothers were competitive from childhood. There was a wrestling ring built in the basement of their Rochester home by their father to test out their competitive drive.

Personal Life of Jon Jones

Jon Jones and Jessie Moses were high school classmates and began dating then. After graduation, despite studying at different universities, they remained in a long-distance relationship and survived for 17 years.

They have three daughters together named Leah, Carmen, and Olivia respectively. They got engaged in 2015. Their middle child was named after Jon’s late sister Carmen.

While still studying in college, Jones got the news of his girlfriend Moses being pregnant with their first child Leah. Reality hit him pretty well. He dropped out of college to earn money to support his future family and took a job near the local bar to support his family.

When Leah was about to be born, Jones, working as a janitor, came in contact with an old friend Bobby who remembered his high school state championship. Bobby encouraged him to become a UFC fighter and helped Jones to learn how to fight.

On April 12, 2008, Jones made his very first professional debut in an FFPat Boxborough, Massachusetts. He faced Brad Bernard and Carlos Eduardo and defeated them, marking the beginning of his reign in the lightweight matches event.

The next match’s opponents were Anthony Pina, Ryan Verrett, and Parker Porter, and he defeated them all and emerged as the victor. He defeated Moyses Gabin in round two for the USKBA Light Heavyweight Championship.

His UFC debut was in a match against Andre Gusmão at UFC 87 on August 9, 2008, organized in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The match lasted the full three rounds, and Jones was the winner.

His next opponent in the UFC was Stephan Bonnar and Jake O’Brien at UFC 94 and UFC 100 respectively helped him secure a contract for another four fights with the UFC and made his career touch a new sky.

He suffered his first and only loss at the hands of Matt Hamill on Dec 5, 2009. Towards the end of the match, Hamill ended up with a dislocated shoulder caused due to a move made by Jones deemed as illegal led him to disqualification. But later the UFC President Dana White declared the match invalid.

He won over Rua, who was his partner Rashid’s opponent, and won on March 19, 2011, making him the youngest UFC champion ever.

During his UFC Light Heavyweight Champion days, Jones had gone back and forth against some of the best fighters in his weight class. Some of the fighters who faced him are Lyoto Machida, his former teammate Rashad Evans, Vitor Belfort, and Chael Sonnen.

The toughest fight of his career was at UFC 165. He was pitted against Alexander Gustafsson. Both of them suffered lacerations and facial swelling. Eventually, Jones was the winner.

As glamorous and smooth selling his career seems to be, it was not that glamorous. He faced ups and downs like everyone else in his career. From being detained in jail for 18 months for supervised probation for a hit and trial case to UFC stripping him off his belt and suspending him on 28 April.

After facing setbacks and odds in his career, he returned to the stage to have a rematch against Cormier on July 29, 2017, and defeated him to regain back the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship again.
