Terry Riley soared into stardom by starting the Minimalist Movement with his work “In C”, which was composed of 53 music modules grouped in a series and repeating to form a structure, in 1964. He has introduced repetition to Western Music, by adding repetition to Young’s conceptual and abstract view of music. In 1969, he released the LP, “A Rainbow in Curved Air” which proved to be a cultural reset, a breakthrough in the minimalist school of composition, and impacted the experimental, rock and electronic music, including organ parts in The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and “Baba O’Riley”.
During the 1950s, Riley had started working with tape loops, a technology that was still in its nascent stage. Later on, his efforts with the help of a sound engineer culminated into the creation of a “time-lag accumulator.”
Riley played his music with a distinctive elegance during the 1960s. He would conjure different techniques and tape delays to perform concerts all night long. He set a record by performing an eight-hour, thirty-two-minute-long concert of continuous music at the Philadelphia College of Art in the fall of 1967.
During the 1970s, Riley ventured into Indian classical music to find some solace away from the hustle and bustle of the music industry. Under Pandit Pran Nath, Riley’s musical creativity reached new heights. During his many trips to India, Riley began the responsibility of co-directing a music study program in Delhi, India. Riley gave raga performances and a key highlight included a concert with the legend, Zakir Hussain, on the tabla.
Riley’s meeting with David Harrington, the founder of Kronos Quartet started an amazing journey in the world of music. They collaborated and created many string quartets and other award-winning music. Riley has composed 13 string ensembles throughout his career.
