Jagdish “Jaggi” Vasudev was born on Sept 3, 1957, in the city of palaces which is Mysore, Karnataka. His father’s job as a doctor allowed them an opportunity to travel far and wide. This occurrence played a major role in Jaggi recognizing himself as a free and individual spirit.

The young Jaggi developed a love and interest for traveling, adventure, nature, and other mysteries of life. In the late 1960s, he owned a bicycle and used to take rides in the countryside and enjoy his time with Mother Nature. 

When he was 13 years old, he met Malladihalli Raghavendra who taught him hatha yoga and kept practicing it for his whole life without any break and made his first mark on spiritualism.

He completed his schooling at Demonstrations School, Mysore. He did his BA in English Literature from the University of Mysore. During his college days, he fell in love with bikes and this fueled his love for traveling more. To date, his love for biking has never faded out. He used to travel India with his wife on bikes and explore.

His father’s name was B.V Vasudev who worked as an ophthalmologist in Mysore Railway Hospital and his mother’s name was Susheela Vasudev who was a housewife.

He was the youngest child in his family. He has 2 elder brothers and 2 elder sisters. He married Vijaya Kumari in 1984 and had a daughter with her in 1990. Their daughter’s name was Radhe Jaggi. His wife passed away in 1997.

Radhe Jaggi is married to Sandeep Narayan, a Chennai-based classical vocalist. She works as a yoga instructor.

Career of Sadhguru

After completing his studies, he opened up a poultry business despite dissatisfaction from his family. It was successfully and let him venture into a successful construction business  

He had borrowed money to start this business and successfully paid it back. He used the money earned from business to fund his trips and travel here and there.

In 1982, his trip to Chamundi Hills marked an important turn in his life. He entered into some sort of spiritual realm and got an experience that changed his whole life. This marked the beginning of his spiritual journey. 

In 1984, he retired from his business by handing over his legacy to his friend. After that, he traveled for a while and began to teach yoga to people. In this process, he realized teaching yoga is his career.

He started to give the yoga classes free of cost and only a few people attended. His classes grew popular in Karnataka and Mysore with time. Many people benefited from his classes. He used the profit returns from his farm to fund his classes.

In 1992, he established the Isha Foundation, in Coimbatore. It acted as a platform to carry out spiritual and yoga activities. Through this, he teaches meditation, inner peace, yoga, and selfless service. 

In the early years, the Isha foundation was not accepted in the community. They had to face a lot of controversy and adversity to become a beloved part of the community. Today it offers Yoga classes in Singapore, India, Australia, China, etc.

In 2003, a polyphase program named ‘Action for Rural Rejuvenation (ARR) was carried out to improve the overall health and quality of livelihood in the rural area. This program was initiated  with the purpose to develop and improve all the village areas across Tamil Nadu, India.

During the year of 2004, they started a project called the ‘Project Green Hands’ (PGH), an ecological and environmental step to plant 114 million or more trees across the Tamil Nadu region to increase the forest cover in the state to develop and improve the lifestyle of people.

He was a prolific speaker who addressed the ‘United Nations Millennium World Peace Summit‘. He spoke at ‘World Economic Forum’ for 4 years in a row i.e., from 2006-2009.

In 2017, a campaign named ‘Rally for Rivers’, was launched to solve problems that were caused by the increasing scarcity of water and river pollution.
