Maria Sharapova was born on 19 April 1987 in Nyagan of the then USSR. Her father Yuri Sharapov and mother Yelena Sharapova were originally from Gomel of the republic of Byelorussia. 

In 1990, the Sharapov family moved to Sochi, Russia. There they met the Kafelnikov family. Yevgeny Kafelnikov was the son of Aleksandr Kafelnikov, who was the friend of Maria’s father. Yevgeny was a tennis player and his father was a huge tennis enthusiast. Aleksandr gifted Maria a tennis racket when she was four. Young Maria inspired by Yevgeny started practicing tennis with his father. Yevgeny Kafelnikov later became the first Russian to win a Grand Slam, with two individual Grand Slams in his trophy cabinet.

Personal Life of Maria Sharapova

Sharapova had her ups and downs with her relationships. She was engaged to professional NBA star Sasha Vujačić in 2011 but ended the three years old relationship in 2012. She started dating Grigor Dimitrov, the Bulgarian Tennis champion in 2012. This relationship also ended in 2015.

She is currently in a relationship with British businessman Alexander Gilkes. The couple was engaged in 2020.

Sharapova’s career in tennis started with the Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis Championship U-16 category. She won this tournament at the age of 13, with the distinction of ‘Rising Star’. Later she competed in the junior women’s singles events of the Australian Open and Wimbledon Open. In 2002, Sharapova became the youngest girl to reach the final of the Australian Open. 

Her professional career began with the Australian and French Open in 2003. Though she failed to manage a single win in the aforementioned tournaments, she came back stronger. With her win in the Japan Open and Tournoi de Quebec, she reached the Top 50 in the first year of her professional senior career.

2004 was a dream year for Maria. She started the exceptional year by reaching the semifinals of the French Open, in the clay season. However, her win in the Wimbledon Open was the real deal that year. She won her first Grand Slam title by defeating none other than Tennis legend Serena Williams.
