From childhood, the young Carlsen had shown his fascination with jigsaw puzzles. He had shown his aptitude to tackle intellectual challenges at an early age and began to do things that were beyond his age.

His father was an amateur chess player who had a great fascination with chess and served as the first teacher who taught him how to play chess and strategies. His motivation to continue this game was fueled by the desire to beat his elder sisters at their own game.

Magnus Carlsen Personal Life

As far as his family is concerned, his father Henrik Albert Carlsen professionally worked as an IT consultant and his mother was a well-renowned chemical engineer. They had three daughters besides Magnus.

He has been in a relationship with Elisabeth Lorentzen Djnne for a few years now. Carlsen is a private person and very few facts are known about his personal life to the public.

Magnus had started playing around age 8 and had been coached by Grandmaster Simen Agdestein with Egil Olsen football coaching as the key inspiration for training the young Magnus. 

After finishing primary education, he traveled Europe for a year and participated in International Master and Grandmaster Levels. He won the title of “Mozart of Chess” from Grandmaster Lubomir Kavalek when he won the C group round at the Corus Chess tournament.

He defeated the world champion Anatoly Karpov in the Blitz chess tournament in 2004 and went on to have a draw against Garry Kasparov in the same tournament. His skills earned him recognition as a dark horse at the elite level of the World Chess Championships.

Over the years in his professional career, he has had some wonderful achievements out of which was the Grandmaster in the Dubai Open Chess Championship in April 2004. 2005 was the year of glory for him. He had participated in a lot of Norwegian Chess Championships and won them all which resulted in him being qualified for one of the top 10 candidates of the Official World Championship.

When he took part in the Linares Chess Tournament which was considered the “Wimbledon of Chess”, his real skills are put to test against top-rated players like Veselin Topalov, Viswanathan Anand, Peter Svidler, Alexander Morozevich, and Levon Aronian, and he ended up with the second place.

Very few people know that Magnus Carlsen has participated in Melody Amber blind and rapid chess championships where he has to play chess in rapid-fire mode while being blindfolded. This tournament put his real skills and knowledge about chess to the test. He came in 8th position in the entire match in 2007.

He participated in the Melody Amber championship held in Nice, France to retest his refined skill again. He came out in the second position in the entire championship.

In 2013, he battled against Vishwanathan Anand, the former World Chess Champion then and defeated him in the finals and took the mantle of youngest World Chess Champion in 2014 and has defended against it till now.
