Jack Patrick Dorsey hailed from St Louis, Missouri, his birthplace. His father’s profession was of an engineer who worked for a company that mass-produced speedometers.
His father’s job involved moving in and out of different places which required a lot of traveling and adapting. This moving out phase made him grow interested in maps and navigation.
He attended the Bishop du Bourg High School in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a quiet student and used to shutter a lot which he overcame by participating in different oratory competitions with determination.
He had developed an interest in computers and spent a significant amount studying the available model of IBM computers during his teenage days.
When he was 15, his fascination with maps and knowledge in computer programs led him to develop software that aided taxi dispatching, fire fighting services, and delivery vans to locate and navigate by using coordinates, maps, and other stuff.
Dorsey was admitted to the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1995 and later transferred to New York University (NYU) in 1997 but dropped out soon.
While studying at NYU, he came up with the idea of a website where he can update his live status with his friends and near ones which became one of the best microblogging sites in existence.

Personal Life of Jack Dorsey
He was a single child. His parents’ names are Tim and Marcia Dorsey. He is part of Irish descent from his father’s side and part of Italian descent from his mother’s side.
He is still single and unmarried though he has dated some famous personalities like Kate Greer, Lily Cole, and Raven Lyn Corneil.

He worked as a programmer on the dispatching software in California, where he moved after dropping out from NYU. He started a company- Oakland, in 2000 which dispatches taxis, couriers, and emergency services from the Web.
While working on dispatching, he grew more interested in instant messenger services like LiveJournal and AOL Instant Messenger and their implements. He wanted to make software similar to it.
His company Oakland went out of business and he joined Odeo, a start-up company that specialized in podcasting. There he met Evan Willams, who had sold his company Blogger and Pyra Labs to Google and Biz Stone.
He pitched Evan and Biz Stone the idea of the status-message idea after the launch of Apple iTunes which led to the failure of their podcasting. Product failure led to the formation of Twitter Prototype in the next two weeks.
On March 21, 2006, Dorsey had posted the first Twitter message “setting up my twitter”. This service had allowed users to send short messages as long as 140 characters which became one of the popular social networking crux and a mainstream form of communication.
Dorsey served Twitter as its CEO till 2008 and later as chairman of the board.
In 2009, Dorsey co-found and became CEO of Square, which offered devices and software to use credit cards for transactions purposes. It launched in 2010. By 2012, it gained two million users. By 2013, it expanded from North America to Japan.
In 2013, Dorsey was appointed as a board member of Disney Company.
In October 2015, he was reappointed as CEO at Twitter while maintaining his Square’s CEO position.
During his second innings in Twitter, the company had faced controversy with Twitter permanently banning U.S. Pres. Donald Trump in 2020 for tweets that were deemed to have violated Twitter’s policy of violence.
In 2021, Dorsey finally resigned as CEO of Twitter after choosing Parag Agarwal as the CEO for the future and growth of Twitter.
On December 1, 2021, CEO Jack Dorsey officially changed the name of Square to Block, Inc which alluded to his interest in blockchain.
