Personal Life of Grace Slick
Grace and Jerry Slick grew up in the same neighborhood of Palo Alto. They shared a lot of common interests while growing up listening to folk and Jazz music and enjoying the folk culture of their time.
They got married in San Francisco on August 26, 1961. Jerry enrolled in a film course and made student films where Grace used to work as a model. Their life was smooth selling and enjoying pop culture. They formed the Great Society together and it was short-lived and so is their relationship, and officially separated in 1971.
She was in a brief relationship with Paul Kantner from 1969-1975 and bore him a daughter named China. They were never married.
She and John Skipson dated for a brief period and later tied knots in 1979. Their marriage was blissful but the bliss didn’t last longer than 17 years and it ended in 1994.
Career of Grace Slick
When she first married Jerry Slick, she worked as a model for I.Magnin’s departmental store for three years to put food on the table. They formed a band named Great Society in 1964 with Darby Slick. They were the famous Psychedelic band in their area.
At Coffee Gallery, The Great Society performed their debut song which was White Rabbit, personally composed by Grace Slick. The group performed songs in various kinds of rock music like Psychedelic rock, blues-rock, acid rock, pop, and hard rock genres, which were popular during that decade. Sally, White Rabbit, and Somebody to Love were the most popular tracks they released.
Slick entered the Jefferson Airplane as a vocalist when Signe Toly Anderson decided to quit the band. The group was professional at the work compared to Great Society and was inclined to the psychedelic form of music rather than folk rock, which was what Slick enjoyed.
They worked together till the end of the 1960s. Slick’s two compositions White Rabbit and Somebody to Love were released together in ‘Surrealistic Pillow’, a successful early work of psychedelic music and counterculture. Those two songs were composed during her days at Great Society.
The most famous works of the band were Crown of Creation, After Bathing at Baxter’s, Volunteers, etc. During the early 1970s, Jefferson Airplane was disbanded and a few other members who are left volunteered to form Jefferson Starship.
With Jefferson Starship, they released albums like Red Octopus, Dragon Fly, Modern Times, Spitfire, Windows of Heaven, and Winds of Change. ‘Red Octopus’ was a big commercial and critical success and made it to the peak of No.1 on the Billboard 200.
During the mid-1970s, she released her debut solo album ‘Manhole’ and ‘Dreams’. When she went solo, her albums were recorded by herself without any prior aid from her friends. She produced another solo album in 1984 called Software.
Before she stepped down from the music industry, she took the initiative to reunite with all the former members of Jefferson Airplane to record ‘Jefferson Airplane’ in 1989. This song was a tribute to the Jefferson Airplane band.
After her retirement, she started drawing different types of works. Her agent noticed her artwork and encourage her to draw more. With that encouragement, she drew about 60 pieces, ranging in style, sizes, and mediums, including oil paint, acrylic paint, pencil, and ink, which are exhibited at Artrock Gallery in San Francisco.
