After serving his sentence in the prison, Derrick Lewis wanted to have a clean start. After a Friend introduced him to Mixed Martial Arts, he decided to start a career as a professional Mixed Martial Artist.
Derrick Lewis officially started his career as an MMA fighter in 2009. His first competition was against Jay Ross which he unfortunately lost. For his second fight, he fought against Tim Buchanan and emerged as a winner.
In 2011, Derrick Lewis officially became part of Bellator 45. In his first fight for Bellator Championship, he went against Thiago Santos and Tony Johnson but unfortunately, he lost the game.
