Billy Joel Personal Life

Both of Joel’s parents shared German and British ancestry respectively. His father Howard Joel was a German-born Jewish man who immigrated to New York during World War II and met his first wife Rosalind Nyman, another fellow European from England in a performance at City College, New York.

They had Billy and his sister Julie together but his father divorced his mother in 1957 because the atmosphere and environment didn’t suit his father’s expectations and he moved back to Europe. Since then he was raised by his mother.

Coming to Billy Joel’s love life been the face of entertainment news for decades regarding it. He and his first wife Elizabeth Weber Small got together in 1973. She had been the inspiration for many of his songs at the beginning of his career but their relationship took a rocky turn in the later years of their life and they ended their marriage in 1982.

Moving on from Weber, he got a chance to meet his second wife Christie Brinkley at a yacht party in 1984. They had a daughter named Alexa Ray Joel together and they suddenly divorced in 1992 but remained friends till now.

After Brinkley, he married the famous cookbook author Kathie Lee in 2004 but separated within 5 years of marriage. Joel had been heartbroken for a while and found peace in Alexis Roderick, his fourth wife, and had two daughters with her named Della Rose and Remy Anne.

Billy Joel was influenced by the 60s artists like The Beatles, Elvis Presley, and The Everly Brothers.  Their style of rock and roll, rhythms, and melodies had created a foundation for simple and sophisticated yet melodious songwriting. 

Inspired by the Beatles, he decided to pursue song as his lifetime career and joined hands with The Echoes while still in high school. He worked for the Echoes for a few years and then worked in other bands like The Hassle and Attila.

He released his first album “Cold Winter Harbour ” under Family Productions which was a commercial disaster but somehow it was later remastered and released in 1983. 

“Piano Man” was composed by him during his travel to Los Angeles after the contractual dispute with Family Productions and it became first gold album and one of his first top 20 singles.

His second album “52nd Street” was released in 1978 and was regarded as one of his greatest albums of all time. After that, he released songs like Glass Houses, The Nylon Curtain, and 52nd Street. 

Some of his famous works include Streetlife Serenade, Turnstiles, Just the Way You Are, Only the Good Die Young, She’s Always a Woman, The Nylon Curtain,and An Innocent Man, etc. which contributed to his breakthrough in the industry in the 1980s.

After his divorce from Brinkley, he wrote his last album “Rivers of Dreams” and since then he has been touring across the globe till now.
