Born in the post-independence decade, Anupam Kher was the elder of the sibling duo. He was born on 7 March 1955 to the Kashmiri Pandits – Pushkar Nath Kher and Dulari Kher. Living in the picturesque town of Shimla, his father Pushkar Nath Kher was a clerk in the forest department of Himachal Pradesh. Anupam’s mother Dulari Kher was a homemaker. His younger brother Raju Kher is also a famous actor and director in Bollywood.
Anupam completed his schooling at the D.A.V. Public School of Shimla. He went on to take on an academic career in Economics, at the Government College of Sanjauli, Shimla. Bored by the textbook-bound education, Anupam dropped out of college to study theater.
He got his graduate degree in Theatres and Drama from New Delhi’s National School of Drama in 1978. In his early years, he was heavily involved with the theaters. He also taught drama at Bhartendu Natya Academy of Lucknow.

Anupam Kher had a very short marriage with Madhumalti Kapoor in 1979. They were divorced in the same year.
Later, Anupam met the love of his life in a theater group, in Chandigarh. He married Kirron Kher in 1985. Kirron is a multi-talented lady who is an actress, host, singer, and also a member of the lower house of the Indian Parliament.
