“Guy”, an R&B group, was formed in 1985 with Riley, Aaron Hall, and Timmy Gatling. It was during this time, that Riley discovered and pioneered the “new jack swing” style of R&B. This brought him under the limelight. He brewed his blend of R&B, hip-hop, and the gospel vocal styling of Hall to create his signature, groundbreaking new jack swing genre which was used in the debut album for “Guys”. In 1989, he produced Big Daddy Kane’s “I Get the Job Done” and helped his rap band,” Wreck-N-Effect”, produce their debut album.
Teddy created a remix of Jane Child’s ”Don’t Wanna Fall in Love” which went on to become a massive pop hit. At the age of 23, Riley had the portentous opportunity to co-produce half of Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous” album. This has sold 32 million copies worldwide and is regarded as the most successful new jack swing album ever.
“Guy” disbanded in 1992 and Riley shifted his focus on promoting “Wreck-N-Effect”. A second group, Blackstreet was formed by him in 1991. This group collaborated with various other artists and went on to give massive hits including the no.1 single, “No Diggity” and “Don’t Leave Me”. The group has disbanded and reformed several times by 2011.
In the mid-2000s, Teddy found himself in a financially sticky situation. He was a victim of a scheme that led him to be bankrupt. He had a recording studio in Virginia Beach, Virginia which was destroyed in a massive fire in June 2008. The investigation pointed out that it could either be a result of a problem with the electric system or lightning, though there was no direct strike. The studio was up for sale and insured at $336,000.
The BET Awards 2009, saw Riley perform with “Guy”. It was in the same year that Riley worked with Amerie and Robin Thicke on their respective albums. Riley’s work on Snoop Dogg’s album “Ego Trippin’” made him a part of the production supergroup QDT, featuring DJ Quick and Snoop Dogg.
He made a natural progression to the big screen and he has big releases under his name including, “Do The Right Thing”, “Money Train”, “Panther”, “King’s Ransom”, and “Wild, Wild West” to name a few.
